I was diagnosed with Restless Legs Syndrome about 4 years ago (age 33) and until then just figured that _everyone_ had tickling/crawling sensations in their legs. Silly now that I think back on it, but I guess that's part of the denial that many of us go through when we start to recognize dysfunctions in our bodies.
This post introduces my history and first-hand experience with RLS. Please read it to learn of my hopes and aspirations for this website, as well as how you can help raise awareness of this disorder and help the world someday find a cure.
I chose RestlessLimbs.com for this website because RLS for me extends up into my arms and hands, so it has truly become a restless limb situation and not just restless legs. I have had this disorder since as far back as I can remember as a child - often squirming in the backseat of the car on the way home from church, or jerking my leg every few minutes in the movie theatre to relieve the tickling/crawling sensations I was feeling.
Medication has changed my life greatly, both positively and negatively. When I take them on time, they control my symptoms almost completely. But if I miss a dose or am late by as much as 30 minutes, then I can be miserable for up to an hour while I wait for the meds to kick in. I have become very sensitive to heat and cold, but that’s a side affect I gladly accept – it’s pretty easy to throw on a sweatshirt if I’m cold, or crank up the AC if I’m too hot. It does however make life somewhat miserable for my wife.
I have tried Sinemet and Requip, and will have to move soon to a third medication since symptoms are creeping in now in the early morning and lasting throughout the day and night. They hit fast and hard, and often before I’ve taken my meds. I have 3 small children and I sincerely hope and pray that they will not be afflicted with this disorder themselves.
Please take a few minutes to introduce yourself as I have done, browse the forum topics, ask questions and find helpful tips for managing your symptoms.
